1688 – The Quakers of Germantown, PA, passed the first
formal antislavery resolution.

1793 – Congress passed the first Fugitive Slave Law.

1957 – The Southern Christian Leadership Conference was
formed with Martin Luther King, Jr. as President.

1960 – Sit-ins in Greensboro, NC initiated a wave of
similar protests throughout the South.

1965 – Malcolm X was assassinated in Harlem, NY, by
members of the Nation of Islam.

1983 – Harold Washington won the Democratic Party
nomination for mayor of Chicago, IL. On April 12, he went on to win
the election for mayor.

1990 – Nelson Mandela, South African Nationalist, was
freed after 27 years in prison.
