1960 – Sit-ins in Greensboro, NC initiated a wave of

1965 – Malcolm X was assassinated in Harlem, NY, by
members of the Nation of Islam.
1983 – Harold Washington won the Democratic Party
nomination for mayor of Chicago, IL. On April 12, he went on to win
the election for mayor.
1990 – Nelson Mandela, South African Nationalist, was
freed after 27 years in prison.
