The Walrus seeks submissions

The Walrus literary journal is seeking submissions from Mills students for their 51st issue of the annual undergraduate literary publication.

June Coryell, the Co-editor of The Walrus, says “The Walrus is open to the public and welcomes any genre of work. We accept art submissions, pictures, scans, book art, images of sculptures; and poetry, fiction, essays and music compositions”.

According to The Walrus’ Web site, submissions are collected each fall from the Mills community. One does not have to be a student to submit to The Walrus.

The Walrus also sponsors open readings of fiction and poetry by students. According to Coryell, The Walrus held its first Open Mic on Thursday Nov. 15. The event had student performers, refreshments and past copies of The Walrus available for perusal.

The Walrus is in its 51st year as a student organization and the name has assumed origins in Lewis Carroll’s story ‘The Walrus and the Carpenter.’ June Coryell and Danielle Silk are the co-editors of The Walrus this year and are advocating for diversity in submissions. “We want to push against the boundaries of what a literature magazine is and have a full representation of the art at Mills.” Coryell says.

The submission form and complete directions for submissions can be found at www.fanciful.net/walrus/. The deadline for submissions is Friday, Dec. 7.
