New Line CinemaOver the Thanksgiving break, while many students leave and go home to spend time with their families, there are many people who perhaps live too far away or choose to stay on campus for this short break. It can be boring staying on the deserted campus with nothing to do until students return for classes. Here are some suggestions to combat the boredom.
Flick it
If you’re tired of your DVD collection, take the bus down to the Grand Lake Theatre
and see a new movie. The Grand Lake Theatre is located at 3200 Grand Ave. New movies playing Thanksgiving weekend include animated Bolt (G), and Four Christmases (PG-13).
Walk it out
Get some fresh air and take a walk around parts of campus that you’re usually too busy to appreciate. If you’re daring, read up on Mills ghosts before your walk. Ghosts include a female ghost in Ethel Moore that will supposedly do your math homework if you leave it out overnight.
Be Sacred
The Oakland Museum of California is showing Evolution of a Sacred Space: Día de Los Muertos through Dec. 7. Curator Fernando Hernandez shows how the annual holiday has changed over the years. Six local elementary and high schools also contributed their work.
Wear a fanny pack
Be a tourist and take BART over to San Francisco to walk the length of the Golden Gate Bridge or Fisherman’s Wharf. See the beautiful view of the Bay from a new perspective, and don’t forget your camera! Restaurants in the area including In-n-Out Burger and Boudin Sourdough Bakery and Café are recommended by any California native.
Shop the Laurel
Take the 57 bus or walk down to the Laurel and grab a bite to eat and do some early Christmas shopping. Visit the World Ground Café, and grab a sandwich, salad, or smoothie. Shops include the Laurel Book Store, first Class Boutique, and Komodo Toys. Or perhaps rent a video from Hollywood Video or Offbeat Video while the Mills Library is still closed.
Get down tonight
On Nov. 28, dance the night away at Just Dance Ballroom at 2500 Embarcadero in Oakland. There will be a nightclub two step lesson, from 8-9 p.m., for beginning to intermediate levels with instructor San Manh. The dance party continues until midnight. Shoes are required on the dance floor and there is a fee of $10.
Levitate
On Thanksgiving Day, watch Macy’s 82nd Annual Thanksgiving Parade on TV. Some of the balloons this year include the Energizer bunny, Kermit the Frog, Horton the Elephant and Shrek. Other parade entertainment includes musical guests Miley Cyrus and David Archuleta.
Rock on
Secondhand Serenade, along with Cute Is What We Aim for has a concert in San Francisco Nov. 28, at 7 p.m., in the Grand Ballroom at Regency Center. Tickets are $19. This small venue, with general standing room admission, is sure to give you a personal experience with these radio friendly bands.
Get lit
Watch the 44th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony at Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco on Nov. 28. Live entertainment starts at 1:30 p.m. and the tree lighting ceremony is from 5:30-6 p.m. The San Francisco City Chorus and Black Olive Jazz Band will perform. Free.
