This week’s Cyclone Spotlight highlights junior tennis player Cheryl Sundheim, who understands that winning isn’t just about what happens on the court.
Sundheim, a continuing commuter and transfer student from Foothill College, won both of her doubles and singles matches against Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU), leading the Mills tennis team to a match win of 5–4 in team points.
By bringing her husband, son and friends to watch her match Sat. Feb. 20, the Cyclone fan base outnumbered the NDNU fans at their own home match.
Sundheim picked up tennis later in life, but quickly excelled in the sport at Foothill College where she played for two years and was an All-Conference selection for last year’s season.
Not only has she brought her experience as a progressing athlete to Mills, but also a positive attitude that has spread to her teammates.
“Cheryl played some of her best tennis thus far Saturday, and I know she’ll keep improving,” said Head Tennis Coach Jesse Medvene-Collins.
“When she wasn’t doing everything she could to win points, she was encouraging and cheering for her teammates. I think in any match – but especially in a close match like we had on Saturday – the intangibles like supporting your teammates play a huge role in what team ends up with the victory,” said Medvene-Collins.
Sundheim and her fellow tennis players will compete again this Sat. Feb. 27 at Dominican University. Their next home match is Fri. March 12, at 2 p.m. against Dixie State.
