A live capoeira performance in Adam’s Plaza signaled the official kickoff of Mills’ annual Latinx Heritage Month celebrations.
Marcelina Menard and Gabriela Gonzalez, the president and treasurer of Mujeres Unidas, welcomed fellow students with pan dulce and passed out flyers with a list of events to celebrate Latinx Heritage Month (LHM).
Though more events will be announced throughout the semesters, Mujeres Unidas has already planned a number of events celebrating and supporting Latinx people on and off campus. The events are as listed:
A faculty-staff-student dinner at the alumni house on Sep. 27, 6-8 p.m. is aimed at creating networks for Latinx-identifying faculty and staff to connect with Latinx-identifying students.
Yo Soy Monologues will welcome back a published Mills alumna, Maya Chinchilla, who will be doing a reading from her book, followed by an open workshop on Oct. 11, 6-9 p.m. at the Student Union.
Latinx Heritage Dinner will be held at Founders on Oct. 12, 5:30-7 p.m. and will feature “Latin American foods from across the continents,” as well as a game of loteria.
The New American Story Project, sponsored by the Mills English Department, will take place in the Student Union on Oct. 27th from 7-9 p.m.
The festivities will culminate with the annual Dia de Los Muertos Altar in Adam’s Plaza and the chapel from Oct. 30 to Nov. 5, which will be dedicated in remembrance of victims of the Orlando Pulse nightclub shooting.
