FOOD | Friday 5 — Of Food Porn, Pies, Interrobangs, etc.

Cross-posted from Kat Gaines’ personal blog The Wine-Y Tomato.

Oh look! It’s actually on time this week! And it’s quick because my thesis is turning my brain to mush.

1) Really Strange Ingredients in Smoothies

Here’s what I’m drinking for dinner right now — a smoothie made with:

• a grapefruit
• a pink lady apple
• lettuce
• red chard
• a beet
• hemp protein
• a handful of raw cashews
• coconut water

Yeah. It’s really pretty, very red from the beets even though it’s a “green” smoothie technically. And it tastes pretty good too (though a little bitter from the grapefruit). My explanation for this list of extremely strange ingredients: it’s leftover detox mode from Alejandro Junger MD’s book/detoxing cleanse, “Clean.” My appetite is much smaller (still healthy, but little) after doing the cleanse in February, and so sometimes (like on days when I had a big lunch, which I did today) all I want for dinner is a veggie-packed smoothie. And these smoothies are my usual breakfast these days. What can I say. I’m a bit of a freak. But I’m healthy, so…there.

2) Brownies

See my most recent recipe post for these, which I’m craving right now:

Ugh. I really wish I had time to bake. Curse you, thesis.

3) Foodgawker

I have long been a fan of this website. Also, FoodPornDaily. Why? Delicious things to waste time drooling over because you don’t have the money/time/room in your diet to make them. But the pictures are so pretty! Like this:

Crispy roasted chickpeas. Wait -- these actually ARE cheap/quick/healthy. Win for FoodGawker! (Click on the image to see)

And these:

Citronge Orange Liquered Macarons -- Yeah...these are more on the unhealthy/expensive/time consuming side. (Click on the image for more)

3) Spaghetti Squash

I haven’t had spaghetti squash in an unacceptably long time, but damn I’m craving some right now. It’s a great substitute for anywhere one would use, well, spaghetti, and so yummy. And kinda fun to cook. Check out this recipe from White on Rice Couple:

Click the pic for a link. Doesn't that look delicious?

4) Tiny/Jar Pies

From The Boastful Baker.

I’ve seen this one making it’s way through food blogs a lot lately, and I cannot get over how freaking ADORABLE they are. These were used for a bridal shower, but imagine the endless possibilities of individual serving pies in jars! Everywhere and anywhere! Weddings! Birthdays! Graduations! Tuesdays! Whatever flavor you want!!! Rhubarb! Apple! Peach! Cherry! HUCKLEBERRY! Lots of cute tiny shapes on crust! Hearts (as seen above)! Stars! Flowers! Interrobangs! Less work to make a couple tiny pies than a whole freaking pie!

Clearly, the tiny pie phenomenon is something that drives me to many exclamation points. But come on, isn’t it obvious why?!

5) Interrobangs

Since I mentioned it in my pie excitement, I’ll explain: the interrobang is probably the oddest looking punctuation mark out there:

…but it’s my favorite. See Wikipedia (research tool of champions) for a full explanation. I love it because I tend to do this: ?! a lot, and an interrobang makes it look so much more…sophisticated.

(Sophisticated?!…Uh, sure. I’ll get my beat-up brain back to thesis-writing now)
