The Mills College swim team wrapped up another great season this past weekend at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) National Championships in St. Peters, Miss. For Katie Young, this is only the beginning.

Young swam lifetime best times in all four of her relay events. The sophomore from Denair, Calif. led off the 400 free relay with a time of 1:01.64, the fifth fastest time for the event in Mills swimming history and a two second improvement off of her previous lifetime best.

In her other three events, all of them relays, Young improved on her 100 fly split time by three seconds (1:09.97), 50 fly split by one second (31.14) and 50 free time by one second (27.10).

“This was Katie’s first time at nationals,” said Head Swim Coach Neil Virtue, who took four relays and one individual to nationals this year.

“She embraced it with excitement and grace,” he said.

Teammates Nkosazana Nkululeko, Amina Dzano, Samantha Sahnow, Amelia True and Kelsey Mercado, none of whom are graduating this spring, joined Young at the championships, which promises even better things for next year’s team.
