Colombian American diva Kali Uchis made Oakland’s Fox Theater swoon

Kali Uchis graced the stage in a sparkly bandeau top, high pony tail and black high-waisted pants ready to bless her fans with her music.

Uchis performed with a drummer, guitarist and keys player at the Fox Theater in Oakland on Feb. 19.

Uchis performed songs from both of her albums “Por Vida” and “Drunken Babble” as well as one of her most recent singles. She covered songs like Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.”

Uchis’ stage presence was equally sensual and romantic like the theme of many of her songs and she displayed this energy on stage. Although her music is romantic she contrasts this with themes of independence and heartbreak.

Borrowing phones and cameras from fans, she engaged the whole crowd by taking selfies on their devices and accepting countless bouquets from her fans up front.

Uchis held the crowd’s attention and prompted her Spanish-speaking fans when she asked who in the crowd spoke Spanish. She covered Alvaro Carrillo’s song “Sabor A Mi.”

Her performance of her latest single “After the Storm” brought cheers from the entire venue.

Although gratifying, Uchis’ set felt short and I was saddened that she did not perform “Tirano,” the Spanish version of her single “Tyrant.”

Uchis closed out the show with acapella performances.

If you missed Uchis’ show you can start by listening to her album “Por Vida” and watching her latest music video featuring Tyler, the Creator. Her music videos are pleasing to the eye and playfully match the vibrance of her music.
