A lively protest at Bay Area Rapid Transit's Fruitvale station in Oakland on March 5 drew around 50 protesters, who blocked the turnstiles at the station while chanting slogans such as "No More Stolen Lives," "Boycott BART" and "No Justice! No Peace! No Racist Police!"

Mills College women supported alumna Congresswoman Barbara Lee at a recent book signing in Oakland.
The nine students helped host the Feb. 20 event, in which Lee talked about her autobiography Renegade for Peace and Justice: Congresswoman Barbara Lee Speaks for Me, published in October 2008.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom wrapped up another town hall meeting Tuesday night, this time coming to Oakland to field questions from a crowd of 200 attendees. Mills College is beginning to assess the feasibility of a comprehensive population management program for the feral cats on campus.
The College has had a feral cat population for decades. Barb Haber, interim associate vice president for Campus Planning and Facilities, said the cats pose a problem because they kill small wildlife and can cause health and safety risks to students.
Three months ago Nancy Thornborrow was told her position as dean of the graduate business program would be terminated after June, according to professors in the Economic department. The College says this was a misunderstanding based on inaccurate information.
A survey administered to Mills College faculty members last year shows that while professors have high regards for students and the organization as a whole, they perceive their relationship with the administration as problematic.

The event was hosted by Music professor Nalini Ghuman, as part of her course "The World of Opera."
His talk was accessible to those who had no background knowledge of opera or its history, and drew numerous laughs from the audience.
