A group of 13 Mills students recently joined the ranks of nationally recognized students. These students were inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, allowing them to network both within the Mills community and with scholars across the country.
The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is an honors organization that recognizes students achievements and gives their members access to their resources such as scholarships, networking events and help applying for jobs and graduate school.
The Mills chapter of the NSCS was started in 2008 by Alumna Ciera Cummings. Students become members by having a grade point average of 3.4 GPA or higher in their freshmen or sophomore year in college. Prospective members will then receive an invitation by email to join the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and pay a membership fee.
Elizabeth Bachen, professor of psychology, is the advisor for the NSCS chapter at Mills College.
“The NSCS is a national scholarship society that recognizes and rewards academic excellence but is also much more,” Bachen said in an email. “It is deeply committed to community service, personal and professional growth, and promoting connections with others.”
Gabriela Beas, president of the NSCS chapter at Mills College, has used the member benefits to receive a discount for LSAT prep. Members of NSCS also receive a discount on GRE test prep, other graduate prep tests and are able to apply to NSCS scholarships.
“There are internship opportunities, and it looks good on your resume because you’re a part of an academic honors society,” Beas said.
According to Adrienne Sigeti, executive vice president of the National Society Collegiate Scholars chapter at Mills, the membership fee of $95 allows the chapter to host events and activities, the induction ceremony and to purchase National Society of Collegiate Scholars cords for seniors.
Beas stated that one member of NSCS is selected to attend ScholarCon, a three-day conference that allows people to network with other scholars and talk about how to achieve goals after college.
