Getting and staying healthy is no walk in the park, but for students at Mills, it can be just a walk across campus.
Most people think of health in terms of the physical body. However, psychological health is important, too, particularly during stressful times of the year.
The Counseling and Psychological Services (CPS) located in the Cowell building offers individual counseling, crisis intervention, discussion groups, workshops, and mental health referrals. Mills students have access to eight free counseling session each academic year.
Students can also seek help from the Physical Education Department to find different ways to restore and maintain their health in an enjoyable way.
Sophomore Murphy Walsh is a student enrolled in the Strength Training/Cardio Fitness class taught by either Head Rowing Coach Sara Nevin or Head Volleyball Coach Peter Yee.
“In order to be the best student that an individual can be, you need to be healthy and that includes physical, emotional, and mental health,” Walsh said. “I’m taking this P.E. class to maintain my physical health.”
The World Western Massage class is an excellent way to understand the ways to heal both the physical and mental aspects of health. Through exploring the way your body functions as an entire unit, World Western Massage is a valuable resource for learning practices to relax and reduce stress.
If fitting a P.E. class into a weekly schedule doesn’t sound very appealing, exercising at the Fitness Center on your own time is also a good alternative. The Fitness Center is located in Haas Pavilion and is open to all Mills students. The hours of operation are posted outside of the fitness center.
The Student Health Center, located in CPM 117, provides services for all active Mills College students. These services include lab tests, health education, immunizations, and important screenings like pap smears, STDs, and blood pressure readings.
By doing things like venting to a counselor, taking a P.E. class, gaining knowledge on health-related topics, or getting a check-up, Mills students can easily maintain good health right on campus.
To make an appointment with The Counseling and Psychological Services, call (510) 430-2130 or drop by Cowell to set up your sessions. To utilize the Student Health Center, appointments can be made through Portal or by calling 877-MillsKP. Walk-ins are also welcome, but are not guaranteed a same-day appointment.
