The Campanil editors went to Los Angeles for a weekend and came back with seven awards and new skills.
The Associated Collegiate Press’ (ACP) conference was Feb 18-21. at which staff attended lectures, keynotes and on panels.
On Feb. 20, the staff sent representatives to the California Collegiate Media Association (CCMA) awards dinner where they received six statewide awards. Among them second place for best use of multimedia among all types of newspapers for the staff’s tireless coverage of the curriculum issues last semester.
Other awards included Honorable Mentions to Opinions Editor Dajanae Barrows for penning the staff editorial on Uber moving to Oakland, Arts and Entertainment Editor Grace Forrest for her article on former professor Ali Liebgott writing for Transparent and staff writer Sarah Hoenicke’s profile on music professor Roscoe Mitchell.
Assistant Arts and Entertainment editor Erin Strubbe received a second place award at CCMA for her headline portfolio, including her story “Corpse flower breathes new life into Mills Greenhouse.” The Campanil staff was also awarded second place for best special issue for their 25th anniversary of the 1990 strike.
While at ACP, editors attended panels that covered topics such as page design, interviewing, community journalism, investigative journalism and photography, among others. Editor in Chief Emily Mibach, News Editor Abbey Flentje, Opinions Editor Dajanae Barrows and Design Editor Francesca Twohy-Haines presented a panel on reporting on social justice issues.
To top off a very successful trip, The Campanil was alerted that the newspaper placed fourth in the best of show categories among those who attended ACP.
The staff cannot wait to apply their new found knowledge to their reporting for the Mills community.
