The cold and dewy morning last Thursday, Jan. 30, paved the way for a sun-filled afternoon. The atmosphere at Adams Plaza from 12 to 1 p.m. was rich with interesting conversation and loud music playing a range from classic Michael Jackson to contemporary Adele.
Each semester, the Block Party brings together new and established clubs and organizations for Mills students to explore and get involved in. This spring’s event was no doubt an overall success.
Some of the clubs and organizations in attendance included the Mills Baking Club, Mills Pagan Alliance, the Garden Club, and The National Society of Collegiate Scholars.
One of the booths in particular was The Womanist, one of the oldest annual magazine journals at Mills. According to Shanna Hullaby, a senior, the publication provides a space for self-identifying students of color to submit their written and artistic work.
Another organization to highlight this semester is Huddle, which brings together educators, leaders and innovators who are passionate about the intersections of education and business.
First-year graduate student Laura Buckner said that the club is really about coming together and making an impact. Buckner said there are no formal roles, just a group of students who are motivated and passionate about education.
One tactic this club used to lure students towards their booth was a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies. Tactics like these were used at various stations, including attractive pamphlets and edible items that were sure to bring in new club members.
Career Services also had a booth to offer guidance in career opportunities, resume assistance, help with writing cover letters and many other services available to Mills students.
