I’m writing in regard to the article in last week’s issue of the weekly, entitled “Mills’ new face of diversity.” In my interview I was very specific about diversity as encompassing more than race and ethnicity. Yet the article still limits diversity to issues of race.
Although cultural and racial diversity is very important, diversity covers a wide spectrum of topics including but not limited to religion, age, socioeconomic class, race, ethnicity, ability, orientation, size and body type. It is necessary to understand this distinction. To limit diversity to issues of race undermines the very nature of diversity and diversity work. It is also exclusionary towards the diverse population of women here at Mills.
