Campus must prioritize community safety

I was assaulted on 3/11/02 in front of the Holiday Motel, next to the 7-11. I was riding my bike, when a young man came up from behind me, and punched me in the face. The impact threw me off my bike, into the street. He was a coward.

Though the campus may appear to be a safe haven…this area is by NO means a safe environment. Public Safety needs to be more involved in patrolling the strip in between High Street and Mills College.

Student safety is a priority. This is a high crime area, and frankly, personal safely takes precedence over education. I was lucky.

I could have been raped, severely beaten or had all my belongings stolen.

Please be aware of your off-campus safety. I thought I was. This act of violence was a hate crime/gang related crime. I was an innocent victim and easy target.
