Surviving in the dorms without starving

As a college student on a budget, buying groceries for your dorm can prove to be a tough task, especially when items are costly or unappealing. With the end of the semester fast approaching, it’s easy to forget to eat, so here are some tasty and affordable options for you to consider.

Ramen noodles, a stereotypical college dorm food, are usually less than 75 cents a package. There are many things you can do with the soup, like add vegetables such as carrots and lettuce when cooking it. Keeping a jar of peanut butter around can prove to be useful. Though peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are often considered a staple of elementary school lunches, they can still be a great meal on the go. You can also use peanut butter as a topping on snack items like saltine crackers.
If you share or have a refrigerator and freezer, buying frozen items such as burritos, tater tots, and chicken nuggets is something to consider. Its instant quality is great for those who don’t have the time to prepare a full meal. There are many options when it comes to snacks. Items such as Goldfish, Pop Tarts, Ho-Hos, Twinkies and popcorn can be found in an average college student’s diet. An alternative option can be canned or jarred fruits. Since they’re preserved, their longevity makes them great for students who can’t find the time to head down to the supermarket on a regular basis.

Beverages are ideal to have in a dorm room at all times. Late nights spent studying can call for a lot of caffeine. Buying soda in bulk can be cheap if you don’t mind having a large cardboard box of cans somewhere in your room.

If you’re not particular about what brand of soda you drink, stay on the lookout for sales; a 12 pack of soda can be just a few dollars. If coffee is more your taste, bottled Frappucinos is a good way to go.

Fruit juice is also great to keep around a room. With a wide variety available on the shelves, there’s no way you can go wrong.

When a meal is bland, spicing things up with condiments and seasonings can help. A small container of soy sauce or a hot sauce like Tapatío can help bring flavor to a lifeless meal. Packages of basil and oregano can also add new flavor to a dish.
