The Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) was recognized last month for its plan to increase community involvement in Mills College athletics.
The Division III Student-Athlete Leadership Conference Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the Division III Governance Staff, was awarded to SAAC in late March along with a $300 check.
The awarded money will be applied toward the development or operations of SAAC, according to an e-mail sent by Jaime-Fluker, Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Affairs for the NCAA.
Sophomore Kirstyne Lange and seniors Chelsea DeSouza and Keshia Ramey attended the Regional Leadership Conference in 2009, where they devised a plan to increase on-campus athletics awareness to not only Mills students, but the surrounding Oakland community as well.
As part of the plan, the Mills SAAC club was divided into three committees, including a public relations group, a community service and outreach group and a workshop group, as a way to get SAAC members involved in their areas of interest.
According to the January 2009 Action Plan Update Form, as a result of implementing the plan, Mills “had the most consistent turnout to home soccer and volleyball games.” Likewise, the Bay Area Invite for swim, hosted at Mills, had a large student volunteer base, as did the cross country team during its fall 2009 invitational.
