Planning student events

Well, we’re just about in the middle of the fall semester, and the ASMC is as busy as ever on campus. Here are some of our current activities:

We have been able to give much more money to clubs and students this year compared to last year and we hope to continue supporting them just as strongly throughout the year.

So far, we have granted special funding to such activities including the Black Women’s Collective for a Goapele concert, Mouthing Off for a program on feminist porn; SAMECAO for a speaker, Nuria Gomez for a Doria Roberts concert, and the Senior Class for a fundraising dance.

We are concerned with cuts in the Mills CARES office. We believe that Mills needs more, not less, community outreach and we cannot make a difference outside these gates without a thriving Mills CARES. We are pursuing this issue. Please contact us if you have any ideas or concerns.

The ASMC is also involved in the Mills College strategic planning process to make sure that students’ concerns are included in developing a plan for the next five years.

Some of the strategic planning topics we are tackling include both academic and social issues.

On the academic front, we are addressing an increase in financial aid, advising concerns; how to reduce the number of mixed undergraduate and graduate classes and how to make them better in cases where they have to be mixed.

On a more social level, we are looking to improve the lack of off campus access (we would like to better the Mills van service and possibly include an optional AC Transit pass in student fees), improve general community life on campus and making the student union more inviting and student-oriented.

We are meeting with the M Center to discuss ways to improve this vital office for students.

We would like to find ways to increase the accessibility of staff in the office for students who have questions about their credit or financial aid, improve the study abroad and domestic exchange process, and improve the customer service that students receive from the M Center, among other concerns.

This is a big issue and we hope to make some headway through the discussions we will have in the next few weeks.

These are just a few of the issues we are working on right now. Please e-mail us or stop by our office in the Rothwell Center if you have any questions or concerns.
