Monster College Advantage tour comes to Mills

As part of efforts to help students get jobs after graduation, the Mills College Career Center hosted a presentation from Monster.com, a leading online job search company. The event, held Sept. 18 in the Student Union, is part of a nationwide Monster College Advantage tour.

During the demonstration, speaker Greg Lewis discussed the job application process and different strategies that employers use when deciding to hire applicants during an interview.

According to Lewis, one strategy several major corporations use is the Applicant Tracking System (ATS). ATS is a type of software program that allows employers to manage and search specific qualifications for their applicants. When deciding whom to interview, employers can narrow down their choices by entering requirements for a position, such as overall grade point average, SAT score, or leadership experience.

In order for students to make themselves appealing to potential emplors, Lewis highlighted the importance of making the most of one’s time in college. His suggestions ranged from goal setting to time management. He also emphasized the importance of participating in school clubs and activities, and gaining work experience with internships. He said that a major indicator of whether or not applicants will show leadership in the future is whether or not they have shown such skills in their past experiences.

The event was organized by the Career Services, and about 15 to 20 students turned out. Many of the participants found Lewis’ presentation helpful.

“Especially the part where he talked about internships,” said freshwoman Nia Daniel. “I will definitely consider doing one in the future.”

“It made you more aware of how easy it is for employers to pick and chose,” added freshwoman Nicole Labarca.

The presentation ended with raffle drawings for prizes such as a Target gift card and flash drives. One lucky student even received software for Microsoft Office software.
