Five journalists and one lawyer discussed the importance of combining independent press and ethnic media to ensure a broad perspective, lacking in mainstream media during America’s war on terrorism in a panel on Oct. 26.
“The independent and ethnic media can learn from each other and should work together,” said Julie Reynolds, editorial director of El Andar.
The main concern of all panelists was that the voice of immigrants and all people of color be heard during wartime. The panelists all said in their lecture that the independent press must keep the perspective of diversity during this time.
“We must tell the stories of racial injustice. It is critical and important to tell them over and over again. We must humanize the victims of racial profiling,” said Michelle Alexander a law professor at Stanford University and Director of ACLU’s Racial Justice Project.
