Dear Mills Community,
Looking for a way to discuss art with your fellow students? Are you an art lover searching for fellow lost souls? A biochemistry major with an eye for Hiroshige? How about an English major obsessed with Manet? Well, if you’re available Monday afternoons from 4 p.m. – 5 p.m., you can join the brand new Art History Society in our weekly discussions about art and the art world.
The Art History Society was created to address the absence of a Mills group interested in talking about art independently, with an emphasis on encouraging writing, art criticism, and leadership in the arts.
Every week we hold rountable discussions on a new topic led by a different member of the Society. We’ve talked about Linda Nochlin’s ground-breaking essay on the absence of great women artists in art history, the definitions of “primitive art,” and museum culture. Every member can bring a subject to talk about – the possibilities are infinite!
You don’t have to be an art historian to join – we accept all opinions and walks of life. Our discussions are very open. Just imagine, an art discussion that isn’t a lecture – and you won’t be graded on your participation!
Through out the year, we’ll be organizing film screenings, attending art events together, networking, socializing and inviting figures from the art community to come speak
at Mills.
And get this: not only are we a physical community on Monday afternoons, we’re an online community 24/7. We just started up a blog and any member of the society can write, post images, share ideas or review art exhibits. Check it out at www.millsarthistorysociety.blogspot.com.
