After months of speculation, majors such as the French & Francophone studies, Spanish and Spanish American studies and philosophy have an answer to what their future at Mills will be.
In a meeting with the Letters department on Feb. 3, Dean of Letters Ajuan Mance said that there will be changes made to the department. Philosophy will leave the social sciences to join Transcultural Francophone studies (formerly French & Francophone studies) and Spanish and Spanish American studies in becoming a part of the new languages, literatures, and philosophy department. A major, global humanities and critical thought, will also be implemented, while creative writing in Spanish and history of philosophy will be offered as minors.
In October 2015, President Alecia DeCoudreaux sent a memorandum announcing campus wide academic restructuring, including the end of the historic book art and dance departments, and the transformation of the languages into concentrations. Since then it has been announced that the dance department will remain on and that book art is looking at different options for staying.
Marc Joseph, head of the philosophy department, is optimistic about the changes. He said that programs and instruction will be the same, making the changes almost “invisible” to students. Currently the Letters Division is in the process of making these department and major changes known to students, both current and prospective.
