Although the holiday shopping season may be over, the class shopping season is just beginning. Classes begin today but the last day to add a class is not until Feb. 3, which means there’s plenty of time to try out a few different courses and shop around to find your best fit for this semester. Special topics classes offer some interesting variety and may expose you to a department you would have never thought to take a class in. Here are a few special topic classes Campanil editors are excited about.
ARTH 140: The Art and Architecture of Ancient Egypt
Egypt is an incredible place for art and architecture and an amazing source of study. Ancient art classes are not often offered here, so it’s a good idea to take advantage of this unique opportunity to learn more about the rich and complex history of this African country.

ENG 180E: Reading Group in Contemporary Writers
A lot of talented writers come here for Contemporary Writers Series lectures and this class gives students the opportunity to read great writing and be exposed to the visitors’ work before they get on campus.

GOVT 180: African Politics
Few courses have been offered at Mills that specifically focus on African politics. This survey course will explore the contemporary political issues the continent is faced with. Its primary focus will be on theoretical issues under the broader topics of governance, development and conflict.

ECON 180: Dollars and Sense
In today’s economic climate, it is essential to understand your own finances in order to be in control of them, which is exactly what this class offers. The course also has no prerequisites, so you don’t have to be a math or economy whiz to get through the semester.

WMST 180: Women in Islam
This course delves into the fascinating role of women in Muslim societies, taking into account everything from holy narratives to legal writings. This course lets you gain knowledge about women’s experiences in different societies from our own.

LET 180: Film Theory
Open to juniors, seniors and graduate students, this course teaches you everything you would want to know about film as art. If you enjoyed “Film in American Society” this could be a great next class to expand your cinematic knowledge.

PPOL 180: Women and Politics
Learn the history behind the journey of women’s political participation in the United States. This course will take you from the beginning of women’s participation right up to the role that women play in contemporary American politics.
