Both senior Aisha Gonzalez and sophomore Erika Colstad are extremely busy and play odd positions on the Mills volleyball team.
For the volleyball team, which she has been playing on for three years now, Gonzalez is a defensive specialist and a libero, which is a player who can fill any position during the game, without counting as a substitute.
Gonzalez’s role is to make sure there is always a strong passing scheme on the court.
“There was no libero when I started playing. I started as an outside hitter, but I’m better at passing,” Gonzalez said.
Colstad is an outside hitter. The position itself is not uncommon, but at 5’3″ Colstad is much shorter than most outside hitters.
“When I tell people I’m an outside hitter, I get some weird looks,” Colstad said.
“I make up for it though, I can jump.”
Besides both being on the volleyball team, Gonzalez and Colstad are members of ASMC.
Gonzalez is the 2013 class president and Colstad is the co vice president of the class of 2015.
Yet another similarity the two have is they are both peer tutors. Gonzalez is a peer tutor for the fundamentals of grammar while Colstad is a peer tutor for rhetoric and composition.
Both also have jobs on campus. Gonzalez has been working in the admissions office for two years.
She works with potential students in planning their visits to campus and also matches up prospective students with current students for overnight stays at Mills.
Colstad is not only an office assistant at the office of alumnae relations, but she also gives tours of campus and is a hostess for prospective students.
With so much going on in their lives, volleyball’s season wrapping up gives them a bit of a breather.
“I can enjoy sleeping now!” said Colstad. “I can wake up at 8 a.m. now instead of 5 a.m.”
