This year's Mills Powow still a no go
The Mills College Powwow remains postponed until next spring, and college officers are hoping to plan ahead through a more collective organizing effort beyond the academic arena, as it has historically been sponsored by the Anthropology department. Dean of Students Joanna Iwata said powwows in the future will be planned by all interested students and groups, along with Oakland community groups and activists. "This is just as much a community event as it is a Mills event and we have to make sure we're connecting with all the appropriate parties," Iwata said. "It's important to cultivate traditions."
Niviece Robinson promoted to Assistant Director of Public Safety
Former Public Safety Operations Superintendent Niviece Robinson was recently promoted to the position of Assistant Director of Public Safety. Her promotion was announced at the end of March by Director of Public Safety Michael Lopez. According to the announcement, Robinson has worked at Mills for eight years. In his e-mail Lopez stated, "I am sure all of you will agree that Niviece is an asset to our community and to Mills college." The department of Public Safety is inviting students to stop by Sage Hall and congratulate Robinson on the promotion.
Heavy rains put a damper on campus construction
The unprecedented volume of rain that pounded the Bay Area last month has also taken a toll on campus construction projects, according to a recent administration e-mail announcement. Construction has been halted on the new Life Sciences building and new graduate housing facilities, according to the announcement.
Prominent social justice activist Yuri Kochiyama to speak at Mills
Mills is honoring lifelong activist Yuri Kochiyama for her dedication to movements for human rights and social justice. Kochiyama was held in a Japanese internment camp as a child during World War II, and has worked for reparations for Japanese-Americans. She has also contributed to scores of other issues, including freedom for political prisoners, protests against the Vietnam war, and struggles for civil rights and racial justice. She will be joined by a number of guest speakers in the Student Union on Tuesday, April 18th at 7pm.
Online registration for Fall semester begins this week
For the first time ever, Mills is offering continuing students the option of registering for classes online. Electronic registration, conducted through students' myMILLS account, begins Monday and continues through April 19th. However, students cannot register until their advisors release a web registration hold that M center officials have automatically placed on the accounts. The M Center provided demonstrations of the registration process through last Tuesday.
