A Mills student reported that a non-student sexually assaulted her in the residential community, according to an email to all students from Dean of Student Life Dr. Joi Lewis.
“It took courage for the student to report this incident and take steps to notify staff in the Division of Student Life, the Oakland Police Department, and Public Safety of her experience,” Dr. Lewis writes.
The case is currently being investigated, and the student is getting campus staff, police and community resource support.
“It is important to remember that it is never okay to be forced to have sexual relations without your permission,” Dr. Lewis writes. “Many of us have been taught, incorrectly, to internalize sexism or behaviors that leave us feeling ashamed, victimized, isolated, and sometimes silent. It is never too late to report an incident.”
