During Spring Break, I decided to do something different, something I always thought of doing, but never did. I decided to get some color in what little hair I have.
I’ve had a long-lasting hair problem since I was 6 that has progressively gotten worse since I turned 12. I’m not sure what I have, but my hair is extremely thin and falls out so much that I look like I am going bald to the point my scalp shows. I’ve never used chemicals in my hair, always left it as natural as possible. I’m 20 now and have reached a point in my life that I realize, if I want to do something with my hair, I need to do it while I still have some. So I went to The Old Pink Chair.
My tío and my tía recently got married. They have always been into Madonna, vintage, Las Vegas, Disney Villains and anything along those lines. When my tía began to pursue hair and make-up at Paul Mitchell, they also began to pursue building a place for her to work.
So, The Old Pink Chair was born.
It started with a vintage pink hair salon chair and has since grown into their renovated garage turned beauty salon in my tía and tío’s home. My tía Jeanette runs the salon and manages scheduling, social media and works with my tío to create a unique space.
It is equipped with two dryer chairs, a sofa, two old pink chairs, a vanity desk and even vintage designed products — blow dryers to hair sprays. The walls are covered with flowers; a poster of women under the dryers is made up of polka dots and photos of Madonna and Lana Del Ray. Soon, they will also have a smart TV for the kids and clients who come in.
Jeanette, my tía, knows all her clients personally and knows exactly what products, how much to use and how to handle their hair. From close friends, people she’s knows from when she went to Paul Mitchell, people who have been referred to her and people who have seen her work on social media, The Old Pink Chair has a good clientele. This is why I go to her.
She did my hair and make-up for prom my senior year in high school, and she has taken my mom and sister from black, blonde, pink and blue. So this Spring Break, I went to her.
I decided I wanted some color in my hair, so I went with a black a-line with my naturally curly hair and some teal/ blue peek-a-boos. She uses the best types of dye for everyone, so with me she tries to use the least damaging, but also the longest lasting since she knows I’ll be away for school.
She also makes sure to post pictures on her Facebook page and Instagram page so that people can see the work she has done.
The Old Pink Chair does hair for people of all ages and genders. For kids, she will even use children friendly dye/chalk so not to damage their hair so young.
I love going to The Old Pink Chair because of its unique look and style and the personal connections that my tía has with all of her clients. I also love my hair — the way she made my peek-a-boos noticeable and, at the same time, subtle enough to hide.
Going to The Old Pink Chair during break was the perfect treat for myself to regenerate some energy for the rest of the semester.
