The most important item in my suitcase? The Associated Press Sports Writing Handbook.
I will be flying to Hollywood in a little over twelve hours with the Campanil staff to attend the Associated Collegiate Press National College Journalism Convention. I’m going to be speaking on a panel about being the Sports & Health editor, so I’ll be absorbing as many facts as I can from this sports bible. I’ll schlep it along on the bus, in the airport, on the plane, and anywhere else I can sneak in a page or two.
But crammed reading aside, It’s an honor to be able to share my experience of being on the Mills College newspaper. I get to work with a staff of the smartest damn women you’ll ever meet, coming out with a weekly paper for this all-women liberal arts college in Oakland.
And although I may not cover sports such as stadium-packed football games, I have the unique opportunity of writing and editing stories about the Mills College Cyclones. Our cross country, crew, soccer, track & field, swim, volleyball, and tennis teams are filled with dedicated athletes who are juggling multiple jobs, classes, and practices everyday.
And so while I’m cramming my brain with more tidbits on sports journalism thanks to the Associated Press, I just have to remember: I’m from Mills college. You may not be able to find us in the index of the Associated Press Sports Writing Handbook, but we are definitely contenders.
