Kirstyne “Kirie” Lange has been selected as an intern for the Sadie Nash Leadership Project in New York this summer. For the next nine weeks, she will be blogging for The Campanil about her experience.

Hey Everyone!
I arrived in New York yesterday and boy, was it an adventure to get here. Completely exhausted after providing muscle for the family move on Saturday, my mom dropped me off at the airport at 4:30 a.m. Sunday. While Southwest stressed the two-hour check in (my flight was at 6:30 a.m.), their counter and security check did not open until 5 a.m. I had a decent place in line, but having to stand around for 20 minutes was not ideal.
After boarding the plane, we got ready to hit the runway and quickly turned around. Shout out to the hungover girl on the plane who couldn’t stop vomiting and cursed out the flight attendants enough to get kicked off! We still made it to Chicago in reasonable time, and I boarded my flight for Newark shortly after. But not before I had to lug a 49 pound bag and three others down a staircase because the elevator was broke. Eventually, I made it into Manhattan around 6:45 p.m. by way of the New Jersey Transit.
I’ll be staying New York Arts Program housing with two other deans. I’m rooming with one and she’s fantabulous! She’s a New Jersey native who attends New Jersey City University — definitely a great resource. The other dean is originally from Las Vegas and now attends DePauw University in Indiana.
Today was the first day of dean training with the Sadie Nash Leadership Project and I have a feeling I’m in store for an amazing summer. Training consisted of program introductions and team building activities for all of the deans. We were able to create our community expectations and visualize our goals and dreams for our summer here.
Later in the day, we met a few second year Nashers and it was amazing to see the level of ambition these young women possessed. They held so much passion for things I didn’t learn until I got to Mills. My heart just melted after they shared their experiences with the program. Since many of the deans are local, I realized the fact that I was selected for Sadie Nash is truly amazing especially coming from so far away.
I’m definitely looking forward to this summer’s session. It’s going to be wonderful.
