I’m here to tell you about why I’m here.
You know how Barney Stinson always takes on a challenge in the TV sitcom How I Met Your Mother? I have a terrible tendency to do the same. So when my roommate and The Campanil‘s Online Editor, Melodie Miu, dared me to read My Little Pony fanfiction everyday for 30 days at the cost of my own health, I took the challenge.
I’m familiar with Brony culture, the group of adult male My Little Pony fans. I once went to an anime convention in Japantown in San Francisco only to find out that the Brony-related events outnumbered the anime ones. That was my first encounter with Bronies and I was horrified, to say the least. All of this comes from a feminist, women’s college student perspective, though. (How dare those little girls watch a show tailored for them while us mens have to deal with what’s on the market!!!! Or so I think a Brony would say.)
I, myself, am not that much of a fanfiction writer anymore. I used to write Pokémon fanfiction when I was 11 and way too young to be on the Internet. But my stories were cutesy and fluffy. Then, I wandered through the depths of LiveJournal during middle school and high school and, man, the things you find…
It’s been a while since I’ve actually read fanfiction from start to finish. But for this challenge, I’m going to read one My Little Pony fanfiction story a day (or watch a vlog about My Little Pony) from this Saturday, March 1 until Sunday, March 30.
I will then write 6 blog posts in total for The Campanil recording my weekly adventures, including this post and my very last one to be published on Monday, March 31.
If you would like to contribute suggestions for this challenge, My Little Pony fan art, or even try to talk me out of it, leave a comment below or email me at ramos@thecampanil.com.
Will I make it through 30 days unscarred? We shall see…
