“Yes we can” becomes “yes we did”

Barack Hussein Obama was elected the 44th president of the U.S. on Tuesday, swept to victory by an anxious country eager to change course at home and abroad. Obama, 47, becomes the first African-American in U.S. history to win the presidency.

Oakland erupted Tuesday night, from fireworks bursting up from East Oakland, firecrackers exploding on Foothill Avenue, to mobs of people skipping down Broadway and cheering while drivers wailed on their car horns and people danced in the streets all the way west.

Events begin for Native American Heritage month

Mills marked the kick-off of Native American Heritage Month last Wednesday with music, frybread and discussion in Adams Plaza, where Native American Sisterhood Alliance members introduced this year's theme of indigenous community activism and repatriation, the return of sacred sites, artifacts and ancestral remains to the tribal nations to which they belong.

Oktoberfest revives Oakland traditions

While San Francisco hosted its 118th annual Oktoberfest last week, Oakland celebrated its German heritage with its first-ever Oktoberfest in the Dimond district, centered at MacArthur Boulevard and Fruitvale Avenue.

The Oct. 4th event showcased local bands and breweries, community businesses, Dimond history, German food and dance, traditional "oompah" music and an open-air beer garden reminiscent of the many German American social clubs and entertainment halls that lined MacArthur Boulevard from the 1890s until mid-century.

More glass shattered at Mills

On April 12, an unknown suspect smashed the vending machine inside Rothwell Center. The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. while the Mills College Native Alliance Powwow took place on Toyon Meadow.
According to Public Safety, there has yet to be a lead on who is responsible for the machine's damage.
