Auction huge success

An eclectic selection of art, crafts, gift certificates and useful items were made available during a Femicides Delegation fund raiser Thursday, March 10 in the Student Union. A last-minute decision was made to combine this event with an annual "Herstory" event for women's history month, according to health program director Cynthia Turner.

The silent auction offered shoppers a variety of choices – all donated by local businesses and students – from hand-knit scarves to Good Vibrations "toys."

"We were hoping to clear over $500 and we did, so in that respect it was very successful," said junior and Femicides Delegation member Gema Ornelas. Ultimately, the event brought in over $1000. The proceeds will fund a 10-student trip to Juarez, and Chihuahua, Mexico over spring break.

The Delegation is visiting Mexico to document and learn more about over 400 unsolved murder cases involving women, mainly factory workers, who have turned up in the desert bordering the U.S. in the last decade.

Performers from the "Herstory" event reading poetry included Swan Gray, Vanessa Espanosa and Stephanie Gentry-Fernandez, all local activists and performers.
