Mills College WeeklyThe Associated Students of Mills College set aside $10,000 from this year’s budget to prevent student government from running a deficit.
“Last years treasurer was really good about being strict and successfully got us out of the red,” Naomi deTablan, ASMC treasurer said. “We have enough money for special requests and a cushion of $10,000.”
ASMC president, Michele Roberts said, “We’re in the black and because we are in the black, we were able to give more money to the clubs and organizations, and fund them more thoroughly.”
The increase in student fees to 126 dollars per undergraduate student aided to the increase in revenue, said ASMC vice president Jill Habig.
The Weekly and the Crest each received $20,000, and the Walrus received $4,000 from the student governments. In addition, the clubs each received 300 dollars, twice that which they received last year.
“That’s a whole lot of money for cheese,” Thea Orozco, president of the Cheese Lovers United said. “That’s a lot of money, especially compared to last year which was horrible.”
According to Weekly estimates, this year’s ASMC budget from student fees if all enrolled students paid, would total $96,138.
The classes received a total of 3,100 dollars, and the lounges received a total of 1,400 dollars.
Leaving the ASMC with a budget of 31,638 dollars to spend on their activities.
These amounts do not include the money rolled over by the clubs and organizations from last year. The majority of that money belongs to the Crest and to the Weekly.
In addition, the ASMC has already approved two special funds requests, one for $1,480 to co-sponsor a concert with the Black Women’s Collective, and the second was for $350 to help Mouthing Off pay for a presentation by a feminist porn company. The requests were funded at 1,480 and 350 respectively.
“Last years efforts by ASMC and all clubs and organizations who got money were so helpful in getting us out of deficit,” said Roberts. “Things feel organized this by the clubs and organizations from last year. The majority of that money belongs to the Crest and to the Weekly.

The ASMC has also been working on instituting office hours so that the students can come to the student government office and get answers to questions or concerns, and learn about the clubs and organizations at Mills, said Roberts.
“Last year the office was not used at all, and we wanted to make the office a living, breathing, staffed office,” she said.
The ASMC office hours are from 12 p.m.- 6 p.m. on Wednesday, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. on Thursday and 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday. The various members of the executive board have specific shifts, allowing students to seek out a certain officer.
“It was a collective idea, a part of our plan to increase communication with other students,” Habig said. “The biggest problem is the location of the office. But we are trying to increase our visibility.”
The office is located in the Southeast corner of the Student Union, in front of the grad student lounge.
The few executive board positions that still needed to be filled at the end of last school year have been staffed.
