So, The Campanil is leaving for the ACP Hollywood conference tomorrow morning and I’m giddy with excitement! This is the second conference I’ve been to with The Campanil, and I have to say, it makes me feel like the luckiest woman alive.
As News Editor this semester, I am looking forward to going to a “Fundamental News Design” session this weekend. The session is going to be directed by Ron Johnson of Indiana University. I’m particularly interested in this session because I’ve noticed that my front pages this semester have pretty much all looked the same…this is not to say that they are not absolutely beautiful and fabulous, but all the same, it would be nice to have a beginners look into the world of design and hopefully be able to work with Joann Pak, our Design Editor, to really make the front page of this paper pop.
I’m also looking forward to hearing a panel on reporting on a private college. The panel will include students from Suffolk University, Hope International University, Saint Leo University and Biola University. This will be a fantastic opportunity for me to hear some of the challenges others face at private colleges and how they have gotten around some of those challenges.
This year I will be participating on a panel of my own: Investigative Stories on a College Campus. It’s exciting to know that my experiences may be of value to others, but I, like Bonnie Horgos, our Sports and Health Editor, am feeling rather anxious about the whole thing. I’m planning on talking about the importance of investigative journalism, particularly at a private college where not many other people are holding the administration accountable for its actions. I will also be sharing some of my experiences, and specifically the difficulties I’ve faced, reporting at Mills and trying to get information from some begrudging sources.
I am really looking forward to this trip and I plan to learn as much as I can. I’m sure we will all come back bursting with new and fun ideas for The Campanil!
