Tennis team nets second win in LA

The Mills College tennis team is gearing up to play Notre Dame De Namur University in a home game on Friday after a trip two weeks ago to Southern California resulted in two losses and one win.

The LA tour started out with a loss to La Sierra University, which beat Mills 6 games to 3 games on Feb. 28. On the following Friday afternoon, Mills was edged out by Cal Tech in a close match that ended 4 to 5. The trip ended on a high note, however, as the Cyclones crushed the Whittier Poets, 6 to 3 on Saturday morning.

Yet team Co-Captain Lisa Kelly felt positive about the team and the season. “It’s been really good,” said Kelly. “We have really committed, dedicated players.”

The team consists of eight players, with Mark Weinstein coaching and Christine Suard, a San Jose State graduate student, as assistant coach.

“I just want them to learn the basics, enjoy themselves and win as many games as they can,” said Suard, who began assistant coaching in the fall.

Weinstein agrees, saying that commitment to the team is just as important as winning matches.

“It doesn’t matter if you are vying for a championship or simply trying to have the best possible experience in a team environment,” wrote Weinstein in a blog submitted to The Campanil. “Placing the team ahead of yourself and competing together is so much more important. And I think my team is starting to get that.”

The team will be in Hawaii over spring break to play matches against colleges such as Brigham Young University and Chaminade University, among others.
