Swim-A-Mile for cancer

Mills College Weekly

This Saturday and Sunday, Mills is host to the Bay Area’s “Swim A Mile for Women with Cancer.” The non-competitive event at the Trefethen Aquatic Center raises money for the Women’s Cancer Resource Center.

The Mills Swim team has participated for the last two years. This year, said swim coach NeilVirtue, all ten team members, two coaches and some other staff members are raising money and swimming.

The event is open to swimmers all over the Bay Area. The Women’s Cancer Research Center’s Web site boasts that swimmers will include “women with cancer, their friends, family and loved ones, swim clubs, swim teams, young swimmers, old swimmers… caring members of the community.”

Participants-who must fundraise to swim-will swim one mile, 72 lengths, or one hour, which ever comes first. According to Virtue, some athletes on the swim team should be able to finish in about thirty minutes.

Swim team members have been fundraising as a group. During the evening pool hours, members hosted a booth to fund raise money.

There are still opportunities for people to help out. People can donate money or time. Some ways to help are by lap counting or breakdown of the event. Contact coach Neil Virtue if interested, 510.430.2384.
