Soccer Team Crushes Bethany 3-1, Strong Finish for a Greatly Improved Season from Last Year

Mills College Weekly

Energy ran high on the field and the sidelines as the Mills
College soccer team finished off their season with a long-awaited
win against Bethany University.

In the high powered game, the team delivered three goals against
a goal keeper that had not allowed a score by Mills in two
seasons.

Going 4-9-1 this year after being winless in 2003, the players
commented on the huge strides they made this season.

The improvements on the team can be attributed to the distinct
spirit of the players, according to head coach Colette Bowler.
“No one ever gives up on this team,” she said.

“This is one of the best seasons a lot of us have ever
had,” said sophomore Nikki DaSilva.

Players remained strong and persistent despite what many agreed
were poor calls by the referees and breaks in the game due to
injury.

The team said goodbye to six graduating seniors playing their
final game as Mills athletes.

“This game was a very good example of how I feel the whole
season went,” said Bowler.

“As a freshman I feel lucky to have played this season
because the seniors are so amazing,” said Stephanie
Hartono.

“The goal I scored was for Mali and Abbey and Amanda and
the other seniors who have played so hard,” said sophomore
Erica Worthington, who scored one of the three goals.

It was the team’s first game in over a week after their
game against Notre Dame was rained out on Oct. 19.

The time off drew many eager fans to the sidelines, including
members of the Mills volleyball and cross-country teams and the
Mills Community Tennis Program.

“It was a very hard fought game and I’m happy to end
the season with a win,” said DaSilva.

“They played awesome soccer today,” said Bowler,
“this was a perfect way to end a great season. The team this
year was the best ever.”
