New Provost Announced

Dr. Sandra C. Greer will be the new Provost and Dean of the Faculty at Mills College, according to a campus e-mail sent by President Janet Holmgren on May 2.

Dr. Greer is a chemist, currently teaching courses in Chemistry, Biochemistry, and Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, at the University of Maryland College Park. She holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from the University of Chicago.

She has also been honored with multiple fellowships as well as the Washington Academy of Sciences Achievement Award.

A committee of Mills students, faculty and administration interviewed eighteen candidates before President Holmgren awarded Dr. Greer the position.

President Holmgren commended Dr. Greer on her previous work. “At the University of Maryland she worked to identify new ways to increase the number of both women and persons of color in the sciences and in higher education,” she wrote in her e-mail.

She thinks that Dr. Greer will be a good addition to the Mills campus. “Mills College is most fortunate to be able to attract such an outstanding leader in higher education and the sciences to our highest academic post,” President Holmgren wrote.

“Dr. Greer’s interest in Mills reflects our academic strength and potential in the 21st century,” she added.

The other finalist for the position was Dr. Jeri Echeverria, who has been the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at California State University, Fresno, since February 2004.

Dr. Greer will replace the current Provost and Dean of Faculty, Mary-Ann Milford, July 1, 2008.
