Ten minutes into the 5k race Lily Page felt a throbbing pain in her foot. A few minutes later, she told teammate Jules Cooch that her foot hurt. Cooch responded, “no it doesn’t.”

Over the rest of the Warner Pacific course in Portland, Oregon, Page ran as if Cooch’s words were true. She finished the race with a time of 23:01-44 seconds faster than her lifetime personal best time. She finished fifth for Mills College, and helped the team to a fourth place finish.

“Lily has become such a strong leader on this team,” said Head Cross Country Coach Laura Davis. “She’s running faster than ever before, and setting a great example to her younger teammates of what it means to be dedicated and determined.”

The week after the race, Page was diagnosed with the beginnings of a stress fracture, but refused to be defeated. She decided to cross train for the remainder of the season, and if issued permission by a doctor, finish the team’s last race of the regular season.

“I am going to do whatever it takes to get in the best shape possible so that I have a chance at racing in three weeks,” Page said in a letter to her teammates. “I want all of you girls to work your hardest and do the best you can do!”

It’s been a bittersweet season for the Mills soccer team with many almost-wins but no wins. At a time in the season when it would be easy to get frustrated, transfer student and team captain Katja Davis showed her Cal Pac opponents that she was not daunted by the challenge before her and her team.

In their game against Holy Names last week, one of the best teams in the Conference, Davis scored a beautiful goal off of her head, assisted by Maya Oubre. While Holy Names still won the game, they had to fight for the win against the relentless Mills team. As a top defensive and offensive player, Davis had a lot to do with the team’s success.

“Katja is a welcome addition to our team,” said Head Soccer Coach Colette Bowler. “She can play anywhere on the field, and makes herself visible in every play.”

According to Bowler, Davis’s work rate, skills, and attitude have impacted the soccer program in a positive way. You can cheer on Davis and the Mills soccer team at their next home game against Bethany on Tuesday, October 28 at 3:00 p.m.
