Co-captain Lupe Cazares led the Mills cross country team to victory at the PUC Invitational on Friday, October 3. The meet was significant for the team, both because they narrowly won the meet a year ago (they won it rather handily this year by a margin of 19 points), and because it was against three other Cal Pac Conference schools. Cazares won the 5k race with a time of 20:49, over a minute faster than she ran a year ago on the same course. Last weekend Cazares ran a lifetime personal record of 19:23 at the Warner Pacific Invitational in Portland.
“Lupe has done everything right this year to set herself up for a great season,” said Head Coach Laura Davis. “She had a great track season that made her strong, did perfect summer training, and came in this fall ready to lead the team to what could be their best season yet.”
Cazares and the Mills cross country team will fight for another victory on November 7 at the Cal Pac Championships at Crystal Springs in Belmont, CA. The winning team and the top five individuals in the race advance to NAIA Nationals in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
