Alcatraz Sunrise Ceremony

Dezbah Turnblad

On Thanksgiving Day, around 4:45 a.m., the first group of people take an early morning ferry to the island of Alcatraz for the Sunrise Ceremony. They gather around a campfire in a large circle, offering chairs for elders. The purpose of the ceremony is to remember Indigenous ancestors, reaffirm a commitment to protecting the environment, honor the struggles of Indigenous people alive and passed, and gather all people together in harmony. Mills senior Morning Star Gali helped organize and speak at the event which featured the All Nations Drum, Traditional Aztec and Pomo Dances, and guest speakers from around the globe.
